Anthony Joshua Wants To Cement Legacy With A ‘Wilder Fight’

Updated On Apr 12, 2019 by Landon Wheeler

Oh how the tables have turned for Brit Anthony Joshua and American Deontay Wilder. Just little over a year ago, Wilder was calling out Joshua and making it known to the world that he was trying to make ‘the fight’ happen.

However, both Joshua who holds 3 out of the 4 major heavyweight championships in boxing and Wilder turned each other down repeatedly for a number of reasons. Things changed after the Wilder vs. Fury fight which turned out to be one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time and significantly pushed Wilder’s stock.

The American was very keen on getting a rematch with Fury as the first one ended in a draw and the two wanted to fight again to see who would emerge as a winner.

Joshua tried to throw his hat into the ring and get either Wilder or Fury to fight him but both boxers turned him down.

Wilder had a great opportunity to sign a 3 fight contract with the streaming service DAZN and get a lot of money including a fight with Anthony Joshua but he turned it down. Wilder would later say that while he was being offered a lot of money, Anthony Joshua was going to get double the amount and he wouldn’t stand for it. If the two should ever fight, it would have to be a 50-50 split.

Joshua Wants A Crack At WBC Belt

Anthony Joshua is set to fight in the United States for the first time on June 1 when he takes on Jarrell Miller. However, Joshua is thinking ahead and calling for his next fight to be against Wilder and is urging the Wilder camp to accept the fight.

In a statement, Joshua said

If I don’t get Wilder, what am I doing it for? If I don’t get my hands on the WBC belt, what am I doing it for? I really want that chance and that opportunity. I think it will be class if I can fight Wilder for the undisputed title.

Wilder is scheduled to fight Dominic Breazeale on May 18 and should he win that fight, it will be interesting to see if he is ready to open talks with Anthony Joshua.

Boxing fans are keen to see Joshua vs. Wilder but as of now, they will not be complaining as the heavyweight division is set for some epic fights which include Usyk vs. Takam in May and Fury vs. Schwarz in June.
