  • The project moved forward after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the final legal challenge in 2024.

A long-awaited casino project in Northern California has finally turned into a palpable reality, as the brand new Acorn Ridge Casino opened its doors Tuesday morning in the small city of Plymouth.

The grand opening ceremony marked a major milestone for the Ione Band of Miwok Indians after more than 20 years of legal fights, planning, and setbacks.

The casino is located on the Oak Ridge Inn property and features more than 400 slot machines, along with casino table games such as blackjack, baccarat, and four-card poker. Guests will also find food and drink options, including the Stonecreek Kitchen restaurant and Old Roots Bar, plus outdoor areas designed for entertainment and events.

On its website, the casino describes itself as a place

Designed to feel open, airy and effortlessly enjoyable. From gaming and dining to live entertainment, this is your new go-to place for good times and great company.

The tribe explained its mission is to represent, serve, and “ensure” its future by protecting its “culture and history, building and maintaining the tribe’s trust, acting as stewards of the land, and managing resources”.

After a Long Battle

The project faced years of opposition and legal challenges over whether the land could be placed into federal trust. That fight ended in 2024 when the US Supreme Court rejected the final challenge, clearing the way for construction and opening.

The casino is a large investment for the region. The 60,000-square-foot facility was built as part of a $110 million partnership with Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc.

Tribal officials say they hope the casino will bring jobs, tourism, and new energy to Amador County, located about 35 miles from Sacramento.

Acorn Ridge is proud to invest in the place we call home. Through local partnerships and charitable efforts, we’re committed to supporting the community and helping it thrive.
