Victor Wembanyama was in the spotlight, delivering a standout performance in his playoff debut. The 7-foot-4 forward ended the night with no less than 35 points, setting a franchise record for most points in a first postseason game and surpassing the mark previously held by Tim Duncan.
The latter was in attendance, along with fellow Spurs great David Robinson.

The night also marked the playoff debut for Spurs coach Mitch Johnson and several young players, including Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. It was also the first Spurs playoff game without Gregg Popovich since 1999.
Mitch Johnson said,
We’ve had a lot of firsts this year. Obviously, this is at the top of the list when you start talking about a playoff win, but I do think our group’s done a really good job of taking everything in stride and just being present in the moment and where our feet are at.
San Antonio’s younger players played a key role. Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year, finished with 17 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.
Vassell added 15 points, while Harper contributed across the board and posted a strong plus-minus in limited minutes.
I thought they responded great. We talked about how this was going to be an atmosphere and a level of energy and enthusiasm in this building that none of us have felt, not sitting on the bench in the roles that we’re in right now. And that was OK.
The Trail Blazers Struggled
On the other side, Deni Avdija led Portland with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in his playoff debut. However, he lacked consistent support.
Scoot Henderson was the only other starter in double figures with 18 points as the Trail Blazers’s offense struggled.
Veteran De’Aaron Fox added 17 points and eight assists for San Antonio, offering stability to a young squad that will rely on his experience as the NBA series continues.
