Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs worked up a 22-9 victory against the New York Giants on Sunday night, getting rid of a frustrating three-game losing streak dating back to last season’s Super Bowl, the longest drought of Mahomes’ NFL career.
After stumbling to a 0-2 start for the first time since 2014, Kansas City desperately needed a spark – and they got just what they needed, thanks to a resilient performance in the second half and courtesy of the Giants, who looked completely out of sync from the opening kickoff.
The Chiefs improved to 1-2 and thus steered clear of falling into a statistical black hole that has swallowed many NFL hopefuls in the past. History shows just six teams have ever dug out of a 0-3 hole to reach the postseason. Kansas City itself has only survived a winless start twice in franchise history, and made the playoffs only once after starting 0-2 in 15 tries.
While 1-2 isn’t an ideal position, it at least keeps the road to January football within sight. As a reminder, even the 2007 Giants managed to climb from 0-2 to a Super Bowl title.
Excellent Night for Mahomes
Mahomes was steady if not spectacular, finishing 22-of-37 for 224 yards. He threw a five-yard touchdown to Tyquan Thornton in the third quarter, then found him again for a 33-yard strike in the fourth to set up another score.

Travis Kelce chipped in with four catches, matching his season high, though the Giants largely limited his damage.
New York’s issues ran much deeper. Quarterback Russell Wilson entered the week leading the NFL in passing yards, but he endured one of his toughest outings in recent memory. Harassed by Kansas City’s secondary and unable to sync up with top target Malik Nabers, Wilson never found a rhythm.
Nabers, blanketed all night, finished with just two receptions for 13 yards, and was forced to briefly leave the field after a hard collision from which he later returned.
By the end, boos rained down from the home crowd, signaling frustration with a Giants team that is now 0-3 for the first time since 2021. While Kansas City exhaled after finally snapping its skid, New York left the field searching for answers.
For Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, the win didn’t solve everything, but it might have saved their season before September turned too bleak.
