India’s T20 World Cup Hopes “Over” After Latest Defeat

Virat Kohli dejected after loss to New Zealand at ICC T20 World Cup 2021India went in as one of the top teams that were expected to do well at the ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The BCCI planned the second half of the delayed Indian Premier League (IPL) in the UAE and cricket fans thought it would be ideal preparation for India to use the momentum of the IPL to back their push to win the T20 World Cup.

Those plans have backfired as India have lost their opening two games of the T20 World Cup. Back to back losses against arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand have now put India’s campaign of making the playoffs in jeopardy. They are unofficially out of the T20 World Cup in our opinion as a lot of things have to go in favour of Team India for them to qualify.

India’s shocking performance in the opening two games do not come as a surprise to those who have been following the team carefully. It wasn’t a great idea for Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri to announce their departures from their roles prior to the start of the T20 World Cup.

Kohli surprised a lot of people when he announced that he would be stepping down from the T20 captaincy while Shastri said he would not continue as head coach after the World Cup. Those announcements created unrest in the Indian camp as there was immediate speculation as to who would replace Kohli and Shastri.

The form of top Indian players in the IPL was also a cause for concern as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant wasn’t great. Their lack of momentum and confidence in the IPL carried over to the T20 World Cup and India look very beatable.

India Must Win By Big Margins

Virat Kohli is not happy with India’s performance so far as he would have loved to have finished his captaincy tenure with a T20 World Cup win. That’s looking very difficult now as India will have to win their remaining matches by huge margins in order to boost their net run rate and keep their dreams of a World Cup playoff alive.

Even if India win their next three games, they will end up on six points and will need New Zealand to lose one of their two games to then see if they can take the second spot and qualify alongside Pakistan.
