Summary:
- Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant will play together again at the All-Star Game.
- The NBA is debuting a new US vs. World format on Feb. 15 in Los Angeles.
- Rosters were adjusted late due to injuries and lineup balance.
Stephen Curry is getting ready for another exciting reunion with LeBron James and Kevin Durant, and we’re not talking about an Olympic court.
The three longtime teammates will share the floor again at this season’s NBA All-Star Game, after the league revealed its rosters Tuesday night.
US vs. World: Three Teams, 25 All-Stars
This year’s event comes with a fresh twist. Instead of the usual formats that have come and gone, the NBA is trying something it has talked about for years: US vs. World.
The game will be played on February 15 at the LA Clippers’ arena in Inglewood, splitting 25 All-Stars across three teams. It is the league’s latest attempt to bring some edge and meaning back to a game that has struggled to hold fans’ attention.
Commissioner Adam Silver believes the international angle could spark a little extra pride among players, especially at a moment when global basketball has never felt bigger.
The timing lines up neatly too. NBC will air the All-Star Game while also broadcasting the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, which begin later this week and run through February 22.
The US vs. World idea has been floating around for a long time, but this is the first season the NBA and the players’ union felt ready to commit to it. Last year’s tournament-style format was widely criticized, pushing both sides back to the drawing board.
Final Roster Drama
There was also some late drama around the final rosters. Kawhi Leonard, who many felt was the most obvious snub from the original list of 24 All-Stars, was added to the US player pool just hours before the teams were announced. That move had a ripple effect, shifting New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns to the World team.
Towns’ situation is unique. He was born in New Jersey but has represented the Dominican Republic internationally, honoring his late mother’s homeland. Under the new format, that background made him eligible to slide over.

The league had already said roster sizes could be adjusted if injuries became an issue. That flexibility came into play with Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is not expected to suit up because of injury. As a result, the World team will carry nine players to ensure it still meets the minimum requirement of eight.
On the coaching side, the US squads are split by age. The veterans will play for USA Stripes, coached by San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson, while the younger group makes up USA Stars under Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff.
Toronto’s Darko Rajakovic was named head coach of the World team earlier Tuesday, rounding out the new-look All-Star setup.
