The New England Patriots have reached a record-setting agreement with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, signing the 24-year-old to a four-year, $135 million contract extension, according to ESPN sources.
The deal includes $102 million in guaranteed money, making Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Gonzalez’s extension surpasses the four-year, $132 million contract Devon Witherspoon signed with the Seattle Seahawks last month. Witherspoon’s deal included more than $101 million guaranteed. Both players are represented by the same agent, Reggie Johnson.
Gonzalez celebrated the agreement on social media, posting: “THANK YOU LORD! PATS NATION LETS GO.”
The agreement comes less than 48 hours before New England’s regular season opener against Seattle on Wednesday, a rematch of Super Bowl LX.
Patriots Have Their Defensive Star Locked In
The contract resolves the biggest outstanding question surrounding the Patriots heading into the new season.
After he was selected 17th overall by New England in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzales quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier young defensive backs.
He has already earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition and has become a key part of the Patriots’ defensive plans.
Contract talks continued for months, and Gonzalez grew increasingly frustrated as an agreement remained out of reach. He skipped most of New England’s voluntary offseason program and participated only in walkthrough and low-tempo work during mandatory minicamp.
In June, he made his position clear, saying he hoped to be “rewarded as a Patriot.”
Patriots owner Robert Kraft had previously hinted that the team had offered Gonzalez a contract that would make him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback, although Gonzalez noted that there were different ways to measure such a distinction.
The new agreement has finally put those negotiations to rest.
Injury Briefly Interrupted Gonzalez’s Preparation
Gonzalez had been a full participant during training camp before suffering a lower leg injury on August 10 after practicing one-on-one with Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown.
He returned to practice on August 24 and traveled with the Patriots for their season opener in Seattle.
Despite the injury concerns and lengthy contract negotiations, New England made it clear throughout the offseason that retaining Gonzalez was a priority.
Coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf repeatedly expressed their desire to keep the young cornerback in New England. Gonzalez and Vrabel also worked to expand the player’s leadership role on the team.
Gonzalez is expected to start opposite veteran Carlton Davis III, while Marcus Jones remains New England’s leading slot cornerback.
He Delivered on the Biggest Stage
Late in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos last season, he intercepted a pass during New England’s victory. He also produced four tackles and three passes defended during the Patriots’ Super Bowl LX loss to the Seahawks.
Gonzalez’s career also included a few injury setbacks. The player missed the final 13 games of his rookie season after he dislocated his right shoulder and tore his labrum.
In 2024, he came back and started New England’s first 16 games before missing the regular season finale after suffering a concussion in Week 17. In 2025, he missed the first three games while recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during training camp.
Even with those interruptions, Gonzalez has already appeared in 34 regular season NFL games and started every one of them. He has also started four playoff games and has four career interceptions when regular season and postseason statistics are combined.
