NFL News and Notes – Thursday November 8th 2018

Updated On Nov 8, 2018 by Ryan Knuppel

National Football League Week 10 is upon us, with tonight seeing Carolina Panthers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of NFL season is ramping up. A lot of the remaining games are divisional matchups, and have huge implications towards the playoffs. We’re going to take a look around the league at some storylines going into week 10 and an updated injury report.

Former Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Dez Bryant is reportedly signing with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints held a tryout with veterans Bryant, Brandon Marshall, and Kamar Aiken, and Bryant obviously stood out.

After being released this offseason, Bryant has been clamoring to return to action, and now has his opportunity in a high powered offense in New Orleans and should instantly slide in as a #3 option behind Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara. Bryant gives the Saints a true red zone threat and another option on 3rd down, and although he has struggled to separate on his routes in recent years, but if anyone can throw him open, it’s Drew Brees.

Veterans Finding New Teams

Veteran edge rusher Bruce Irvin was waived by the Raiders earlier this week, and subsequently claimed by the decimated Falcons. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden cited a lack of tenacity and effort on Irvin’s part as to why they chose to part ways with the former captain.

Running back Ameer Abdullah was also waived by his former team, the Detroit Lions this week, as he has been phased out of the offense almost entirely due to the emergence of Kerryon Johnson and clear roles of Legarette Blount and Theo Riddick. A former second round pick, Abdullah was claimed by the Vikings, and understandably has been given a second chance in the league.

From Player To Politician

It’s always cool to hear about former players successes post football, and Anthony Gonzalez and Colin Allred are making the most of their post-NFL life. Gonzalez, a former wide receiver for the Colts, is now the representative for the 16th district of Ohio. Former Titans Linebacker Colin Allred won the representative seat for the 32nd district of Texas.

The Dallas Morning News

In local elections, former Raider, Chief, and Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris won a seat in the Illinois Senate, while former Redskins and Packers tight end Clint Didier won the Franklin County, WA Commisioner’s seat. Former Packers and Giants safety Aaron Rouse won a seat on the Virginia Beach city council as well. Pretty cool to see former NFL players getting out there and trying to make a difference.

Cowboys Conundrum

The Cowboys have embraced mediocrity at this point. Jerry Jones is locked in with Jason Garrett and Dak Prescott as the coach/QB of the future, much to the surprise and ire of NFL and Cowboys fans across the nation. Any casual fan can see that there are institutional problems with the Cowboys, especially on offense, and no one knows where to point the finger.

Former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman said the organization needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom. Jones has repeatedly stuck up for Garrett, Linehan, and Prescott, but whether he actually means it or it’s just to save face remains to be seen. What I do know is that the Cowboys have won exactly 2 playoff games since Aikman left, and the NFL is definitely more entertaining when the Cowboys are good.
