Senator Supports Bill That Could Regulate Sports Betting Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/percy-downe-shows-expresses-support-towards-sports-betting-adverts.jpg\" title=\"Prince Edward Island Senator Percy Downe Supports Bill That Could Regulate Sports Betting Ads\" alt=\"Senator Percy Downe expresses support towards sports betting adverts\" width=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14011\" \/><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Senator has expressed support for a bill that would regulate sports betting ads<\/li>\n<li>Percy Downe expressed concern over \u201cthe impact on young people\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Wants to see restrictions on betting promotions similar to alcohol and tobacco. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prince Edward Island <strong>Senator Percy Downe<\/strong> has expressed his support in favor of a bill that would force Ottawa to regulate advertisements aimed at promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/ca\/legal-canadian-online-betting-sites\">sports betting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Downe believes that companies that own mobile apps and single-sport gambling platforms should deal with the same type of harsh restrictions on ads like the ones that are currently employed for alcohol and tobacco products. <\/p>\n<h2>\u201cThey\u2019re Simply Annoying\u201d and \u201cTrigger Addiction\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The Senator explained that while the majority of people watching sports betting ads usually find them \u201c<em>simply annoying<\/em>\u201d, for others, \u201c<em>they trigger addiction<\/em>&#8220;. <\/p>\n<p>Downe went on and voiced out his concern regarding the impact that the respective ads may have on \u201c<em>young people<\/em>\u201d given the fact that they \u201c<em>feature a lot of sports heroes, a lot of celebrities<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The Senator explained youngsters \u201c<em>may be aspiring for that lifestyle<\/em>\u201d, thinking they could \u201c<em>make some easy money<\/em>\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He also raised the question of whether they were &#8220;<em>expanding the number of gamblers<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>growing the addiction problem in the future<\/em>&#8221; by openly allowing these ads and not adding more rules and restrictions. <\/p>\n<h2>What Bill S-269 Could Include<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Senator Marty Deacon<\/strong>, a representative of the Waterloo region in Ontario, introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parl.ca\/DocumentViewer\/en\/44-1\/bill\/S-269\/first-reading\">Bill S-269<\/a> as an Independent. <\/p>\n<p>The Bill is meant to generate a national framework that would help regulate sports betting ads which, in Deacon\u2019s opinion, have become &#8220;<em>very attractive and addictive and sensational<\/em>&#8220;. <\/p>\n<p>The new rules in Deacon\u2019s Bill could include a limitation or ban imposed on the use of athletes and celebrities in sports betting ads (similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/uk-gambling-ads-can-no-longer-feature-celebrities\/\">UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/dutch-ban-on-online-gambling-celebrity-endorsements-is-now-official\/\">Dutch regulations<\/a>), a limitation on the number of ads that are allowed to be played or shown in any given location, and\/or a complete ban on ad broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>Bill S-269 passed a second reading in the Senate last week and it still needs to pass a third reading before it is sent back to the House of Commons, allowing the MPs to weigh in on it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary: The Senator has expressed support for a bill that would regulate sports betting ads Percy Downe expressed concern over \u201cthe impact on young people\u201d.
