{"id":13985,"date":"2024-04-19T11:07:48","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T11:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/?p=13985"},"modified":"2024-04-19T11:08:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T11:08:24","slug":"grass-fire-interrupts-chinese-grand-prix-practice-session-lance-stroll-leads-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/grass-fire-interrupts-chinese-grand-prix-practice-session-lance-stroll-leads-running\/","title":{"rendered":"Grass Fire Interrupts Chinese Grand Prix Practice Session, Stroll Leads Running"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/grass-fire-at-chinese-grand-prix-practise-session-2024.jpg\" alt=\"Grass fire at Chinese Grand Prix Practise session 2024\" title=\"Grass Fire Interrupts Chinese Grand Prix Practice Session, Stroll Leads Running\" width=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13986\" \/><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aston Martin\u2019s Lance Stroll finished the only Chinese GP practice session in first position. <\/li>\n<li>He was followed by McLaren&#8217;s Oscar Piastri and Red Bull\u2019s Max Verstappen.  <\/li>\n<li>A small grass fire briefly disrupted the running.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After a five-year hiatus, the iconic Shanghai International Circuit is once again hosting the fastest F1 cars in the world ahead of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/sports-betting\/formula-one\">Formula 1 Lenovo Chinese Grand Prix 2024<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The competition, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/sporting-events-in-asia-get-postponed-or-cancelled-due-to-coronavirus\/\">first post-COVID-19 F1 event in China<\/a>, will take place on April 21 over the 56 laps of the 5.451-km circuit. <\/p>\n<p>The much-anticipated practice session, which was also the only scheduled practice prior to the first Sprint Qualifying weekend, was briefly interrupted by a bizarre fire and led by <strong>Lance Stroll<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2>Lance Stroll Leading the Practice Race <\/h2>\n<p>The teams embraced differing approaches to the practice hour, testing out various tyre and fuel load strategies<\/p>\n<p>World champion <strong>Max Verstappen<\/strong> was in the lead for most of the session for Red Bull, on both medium and soft tyres. <\/p>\n<p>He was eventually overhauled in the closing minutes by McLaren&#8217;s <strong>Oscar Piastri<\/strong> and Aston Martin&#8217;s Stroll who set an unexpected pace in the intriguing session that was abruptly interrupted by a strange grass fire.<\/p>\n<p>His fastest time of <em>1:36.302<\/em> made him 0.327s faster than Piastri&#8217;s while Red Bull&#8217;s Verstappen recorded a further 0.021s adrift.<\/p>\n<p>Sergio Perez finished fourth in the second Red Bull.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari, which is Red Bull&#8217;s closest challenger this season, ran the soft tyres early in the session and ended up slipping out of the top 10. <\/p>\n<p>Mercedes led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/lewis-hamilton-stuns-f1-world-signs-with-ferrari-ahead-of-2025-season\/\">departing Lewis Hamilton<\/a> were the only team that chose not to run the soft or the medium compound.<\/p>\n<h2>Unexpected Grass Fire <\/h2>\n<p>The Shanghai track\u2019s surface appearance took both drivers and teams by surprise during the circuit walks on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>While some believed the surface featured sections covered in dark paint, it turned out that the respective patches were, in fact, a bitumen treatment meant to prevent disintegration while eliminating dust.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>grass on the inside of Turn Seven caught on fire just 15 minutes into the running session<\/strong>, immediately causing the Race Control to throw the red flag and ask the cars to go back to the pit lane and enable the marshals to put the fire out.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hi9RurOgmTY?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The issue was quickly fixed, leaving behind a scorched section of grass left.<\/p>\n<p>The incident might have been caused by a spark generated by a titanium skid-block on the underside of a car when it hit the ground through the high-speed section. <\/p>\n<p>The dry and windy conditions in Shanghai following rain earlier in the week could have also contributed to the problem.<\/p>\n<p>The Sprint Qualifying has been scheduled for 8.30 am on Friday, setting the grid for the 19-lap Sprint race that will unfold at 4 am on Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary: Aston Martin\u2019s Lance Stroll finished the only Chinese GP practice session in first position.
