She also admitted to stealing the money.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, Judge Thomas Leone in Cayuga County Court <strong>sentenced the ex-judge to five years\u2019 probation for fourth-degree grand larceny<\/strong>, which is a class E felony. <\/p>\n<p>The same plea agreement has Shepardson, who is a self-admitted gambling addict, pay more than $6,000 restitution.<\/p>\n<h2>The Formed Judge Is Currently in Recovery <\/h2>\n<p>Shepardson\u2019s lawyer, J. Justin Woods, put the focus on her continuous efforts to defeat her gambling problem. <\/p>\n<p>At the end of last year, Woods explained that <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>near the end of her service, Justice Shepardson developed a gambling addiction for which she is now in recovery<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that the former judge \u201c<em>appreciated the opportunity to serve her community on the bench with fairnes<\/em>s\u201d while she was also preparing to go back to private life and raise awareness and offer treatment resources regarding gambling addiction to individuals in isolated rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>Shepardson also used the self-exclusion option at all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/us\/legal-us-online-casino-sites\">US casinos<\/a> in the area, including Cayuga Nation\u2019s Lakeside Entertainment I and II and the del Lago Resort &#038; Casino.<\/p>\n<h2>Undermining Public Confidence <\/h2>\n<p>According to the state Judicial Conduct Commission\u2018s Robert Tembeckjian, the ex-judge had undermined \u201c<em>public confidence in the integrity of the judiciary<\/em>\u201d and let down the public.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that court justices in towns and villages should focus on <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>safeguarding, reporting, and promptly remitting all official monies collected by their courts from fines, fees, and other sources<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By failing to do so, which was the case of Spehardson, Tembeckjian explained the public\u2019s confidence in the judicial system was shattered.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in 2010, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/111\/crpt\/hrpt427\/CRPT-111hrpt427.pdf\">US District Judge Thomas Porteous was impeached<\/a> and eventually removed from office by Congress after he was found guilty of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted to battling gambling addiction as well as an alcohol problem, which made him agree to receive bribes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sumary: A Moravia judge was sentenced to five years\u2019 probation for fourth-degree grand larceny.
