{"id":13795,"date":"2023-12-12T14:41:31","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T14:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/?p=13795"},"modified":"2023-12-12T14:41:31","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T14:41:31","slug":"macau-government-seeks-extension-of-jail-term-for-gambling-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/macau-government-seeks-extension-of-jail-term-for-gambling-crimes\/","title":{"rendered":"Macau Government Seeks Extension of Jail Term for Gambling Crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/macau-police-arresting-suspects-of-illegal-gambling.jpg\" alt=\"Macau Police arresting suspects of illegal gambling\" title=\"Macau Government Seeks Extension of Jail Term for Gambling Crimes\" width=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13796\" \/><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The maximum jail sentence for gambling crimes will be increased to eight years<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cmultiplier\u201d practice will be included as an illegal operation of games of fortune<\/li>\n<li>Macau To Experience A Casino Inspector Shortage in 2024<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Macau will introduce tougher punishments for individuals committing gambling crimes as part of new amendments to the city\u2019s illegal gambling regime. <\/p>\n<p>Under the new proposals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/macau-government-proposes-issuing-10-year-casino-licenses-for-six-operators\/\">the Macau government<\/a> will increase the maximum jail sentences and the allowed duration of preventive detention for gambling crimes. <\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<em>multiplier<\/em>\u201d practice will also be added to the list of illegal activities covered by the regime, originally known as <a href=\"https:\/\/bo.io.gov.mo\/bo\/i\/96\/30\/lei08_cn.asp\">Law No. 8\/96\/M<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Macau to Increase Prison Terms for Gambling Crimes<\/h2>\n<p>In a recent press briefing, <strong>Coco Leong Weng In<\/strong>, director of Macau\u2019s Legal Affairs Bureau, revealed that those found to be involved in gambling crimes \u2013 including the illegal operation of games of fortune, the illegal operation of mutual betting, and the illegal operation of online gambling \u2013 will be facing prison terms of one to eight years, up from the current maximum sentence of three years. Additionally, the preventive detention will be extended by two months to one year.<\/p>\n<p>The government also wants the \u201c<em>multiplier<\/em>\u201d practice, which has become rampant at casinos across the city, to be \u201c<em>explicitly<\/em>\u201d considered a form of illegal operation of games of fortune. In this illicit practice, both the dealers and the players in VIP gaming rooms collude to magnify the wagers on the table in order to avoid paying huge taxes. <\/p>\n<p>While such activities are already considered a crime in the existing Law No. 8\/96\/M, there have been different interpretations on the subject, according to <strong>Andr\u00e9 Cheong Weng Chon<\/strong>, spokesman of the Executive Council and the Secretary for Administration and Justice. The proposed amendments, which will see the multiplier practice officially included as an illegal operation of games of fortune, will clear things up, Mr. Cheong said.<\/p>\n<p>The legal proposal also includes <strong>a much stricter handling of gambling crime suspects, with those placed under preventive detention not allowed to contact other individuals<\/strong>, except their lawyers, prior to a judicial interrogation. For severe cases, <strong>security officers, through the power of a search warrant, may conduct a search operation on the suspects\u2019 houses from 9 pm to 7 am even without the suspects\u2019 consent<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2>Casino Inspector Shortage to Continue in 2024<\/h2>\n<p>In other developments, the Macau government has admitted that the city\u2019s casino regulator, the <strong>Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau<\/strong> (DICJ), will continue to experience a shortage of casino inspectors in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>The agency will hire 60 new inspectors next year, bringing the total number to 139, but that will still not be enough to properly patrol all of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/macau-casino-operators-join-tourism-campaign-to-bring-in-foreigners\/\">Macau\u2019s gaming venues<\/a>, the government said in an opinion
