Players won\u2019t know the contents of the boxes until they\u2019re opened, and because of this, many advocacy groups and campaigners believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/loot-boxes-deemed-as-predatory-gambling-by-a-university-of-adelaide-study\/\">loot boxes must be treated as a form of gambling<\/a> and must be regulated. <\/p>\n<p>Such concerns have led some countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands to ban loot boxes in their respective jurisdictions.<br \/>\nIn the UK, there is currently no specific regulation governing loot boxes. Hence, they cannot be considered illegal in the country. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/uk-releases-new-guidance-on-industry-led-protections-regarding-loot-boxes\/\">there are rules and guidance for companies<\/a> when it comes to advertising products that contain loot boxes. <\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s advertising codes, written by the <strong>Committees of Advertising Practice<\/strong> (CAP), require all mobile games developers to make clear if a game contains loot boxes or random-item purchasing, as the presence of that particular feature could influence consumers\u2019 decision to purchase or download a game, especially those with vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>As per the complaints, the two games in question developed by Hutch Games, \u201c<em>Rebel Racing<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>F1 Clash \u2013 Racing Manager<\/em>\u201d, contained loot boxes but the company did not specify that when it listed the products on the app store. Instead, Hutch Games used the taglines, \u201c<em>Free \u2013 Offers In-App Purchases<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>in-app purchases<\/em>\u201d. The complainant argued the omission of information regarding the presence of loot boxes violated the CAP Code. <\/p>\n<h2>Hutch Games Ordered to Update Ads on Games with Loot Boxes<\/h2>\n<p>In its response, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hutch.io\">Hutch Games<\/a> confirmed the two games contained loot boxes and acknowledged that it misinterpreted the CAP guidance. ASA upheld the two complaints, ruling that Hutch Games\u2019 taglines breached the CAP Code as they misleadingly omitted material information.
