Apart from the multiple scandals that hit Star, revenue at its Barangaroo property was also affected by increased competition, as rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/crown-sydney-finally-set-to-open-this-august-after-a-two-year-delay\/\">Crown opened a new casino in Sydney<\/a> in August 2022.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FbbmXd8aU2c?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Star Sydney\u2019s revenue is expected to continue to take a hit, with the NSW announcing an increase in duty rates applied to casinos. The move is <strong>aimed at raising an additional $364 million for the state over the next three years<\/strong> which will support recovery efforts for communities affected by COVID-19, floods, and bushfires.<\/p>\n<h2>Star\u2019s Fate Remains Uncertain<\/h2>\n<p>Star became the subject of casino inquiries in NSW and Queensland over allegations of criminal activities, including money laundering, fraud, and organized crime at its gaming venues. A report by <strong>Adam Bell SC<\/strong> ultimately found Star unfit to hold its Sydney license. The company also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/star-entertainment-found-unsuitable-to-retain-queensland-casino-license-by-attorney-general\/\">suffered the same fate concerning its gaming operations in Queensland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Star\u2019s Sydney license has been suspended, with the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) appointing <strong>Nick Weeks<\/strong> as special manager for the casino. He also holds a similar role in Star\u2019s two casinos in Queensland, Treasury Brisbane and Star Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p>The damning findings relating to Star\u2019s serious regulatory failings led to massive financial penalties for the company, with both the NSW and Queensland governments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/star-entertainment-must-raise-100-million-to-pay-its-latest-fine\/\">imposing a $100 million fine on the casino operator<\/a>. While it avoided license suspension in Queensland, Star was given 12 months to fix its problems.
