{"id":12944,"date":"2023-01-06T10:47:55","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T10:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/?p=12944"},"modified":"2023-01-06T13:39:24","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T13:39:24","slug":"new-research-reveals-gambling-addiction-impact-on-aussie-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/new-research-reveals-gambling-addiction-impact-on-aussie-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"New Research Reveals Gambling Addiction Impact on Aussie Veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/australian-soldiers-playing-a-game-of-two-up.jpg\" alt=\"Australian soldiers playing a game of Two-Up\" title=\"New Research Reveals Gambling Addiction Impact on Aussie Veterans \" width=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12945\" \/><strong>Summary<\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One in five Aussie veterans have tried to kill themselves due to gambling addiction<\/li>\n<li>The research comes as the NSW government finalizes proposals for gambling reforms<\/li>\n<li>NSW RSL clubs are opposing the reforms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New research has found the rate of attempted suicide linked to gambling addiction is higher among Australian veterans than the general population who are considered amongst the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/australians-are-worlds-worst-gamblers-on-sports-betting\/\">worst gamblers in the world<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The findings were unveiled after <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.rslnsw.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/29144517\/RSLNSW-MOU-ClubsNSW-RSLSCA-V03.pdf\">New South Wales (NSW) RSL clubs<\/a> had expressed strong opposition to gambling reform plans by the NSW government<\/p>\n<h2>1 in 5 Veterans Tried to Kill Themselves due to Problem Gambling<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rest.neptune-prod.its.unimelb.edu.au\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/41ac0e3c-b460-4ec8-8ab3-2e8967d3fe95\/content\">According to the study<\/a> which will be published in the coming weeks, <strong>40% of veterans have had suicidal thoughts while one in five have tried to end their lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Olivia Metcalf<\/strong>, senior research fellow at the University of Melbourne and lead author of the research, said more needs to be done to gain a better understanding of the impact of gambling addiction on trauma-affected populations, especially the veterans who are \u201c<em>vulnerable to suicide<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Metcalf acknowledged they do not have sufficient data to provide an accurate comparison of addiction-linked attempted suicide rates between the veterans and the civilians, but she said it seems the rate among veterans is higher compared to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that <strong>13% of veterans exhibit signs of problem gambling within five years of retirement<\/strong>, putting them at a higher risk of developing gambling addiction than the general population. <\/p>\n<h2>NSW RSL Clubs Accused of Exploiting Veterans<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/au\/pokies\">Pokies<\/a> are prevalent in RSL clubs across the state as the gaming machines serve as the clubs\u2019 main source of revenue. NSW RSL clubs use a portion of that revenue to provide support for the veteran community and their families through donations and other services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Margot Smith<\/strong>, chief executive of NSW RSL Services Clubs Associations, has urged members to speak up against government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/crown-sydney-agrees-to-cashless-gambling-and-no-smoking-demands\/\">proposals to introduce cashless gaming<\/a> in NSW clubs, saying the measure would do more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet<\/strong> is pushing on with the plan which is aimed at combating money laundering and problem gambling. In fighting the proposed changes, Smith said they need the support of the \u201c<em>silent majority<\/em>\u201d who are benefiting from RSL clubs\u2019 operations.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof Malcolm Battersby<\/strong>, head of psychiatry at Flinders University who was also involved in the new study, lashed out at RSL for \u201c<em>exploiting<\/em>\u201d the veterans, allowing them to lose massive sums resulting in gambling harm. Prof Battersby accused the organization of \u201c<em>making profits out of misery<\/em>\u201d, which is entirely a contradiction to its primary mission of providing care and service to veterans.<\/p>\n<p>Smith has maintained that NSW RSL clubs have been providing \u201c<em>sustainable and responsible gambling<\/em>\u201d for their patrons. However, in 2020, the Dee Why RSL Club was slapped with a $200,000 penalty by the <strong>NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority<\/strong> for \u201c<em>irresponsible<\/em>\u201d practices,
