Stokes will take over predecessor <strong>Joe Root<\/strong>, who resigned from the position on 15 April.<\/p>\n<p>Key had visited Stokes in North East for an in-person meeting to discuss him taking over the captaincy after Root\u2019s resignation. The all-rounder was eager to take on the new role. Previously, the Yorkshireman was the vice-captain of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/sports-betting\/cricket\">English Test cricket<\/a> team.<\/p>\n<p>The news of the appointment was announced by April 28, in an ECB-led press conference at Lord\u2019s. The event will also be Key\u2019s first media appearance as England\u2019s new cricket director.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FgZzNx9Jz6w?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stokes\u2019 appointment comes after captain Joe Root\u2019s resignation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/joe-root-captaincy-under-threat-if-england-suffer-ashes-whitewash\/\">Root stepped down from the captaincy<\/a> a fortnight after the team lost by 1-0 in the West Indies. In the five years Root was the captain, <strong>England has won only one match out of 17.<\/strong> Stokes was already a popular choice for the captaincy due to the lack of any other potential contenders.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the 30-year-old Yorkshireman was deemed an \u2018<em>inspirational captain<\/em>\u2019 by <strong>Marcus North<\/strong>, Durham\u2019s director of cricket. North appreciated Stokes, calling him a \u2018match winner\u2019 and a natural team player who was capable of inspiring his teammates. Extolling his give-it-all attitude and immense dedication to play for England, he said that Stokes would prove to be an exemplary captain if given the opportunity. Touted as one of the lead candidates to become England&#8217;s new cricket director, North had retreated from the competition in early April. <\/p>\n<h2>SA\u2019s Kirsten Might Become New Test Coach<\/h2>\n<p>Aside from ratifying Stokes\u2019 appointment as the Test captain, Key is also tasked with appointing a white-ball coach and a new Test coach for the English cricket team. The vacancies were advertised formally on April 26. Several candidates such as <strong>Simon Katich, Otis Gibson and Gary Kirsten<\/strong> have expressed their interest in the role.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten, a South African, is the latest to confirm his availability for the job. Currently, the former South African opener is acting as a mentor to the Gujarat Titans in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/in\/legal-indian-online-betting-sites\">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022<\/a>.
