While NFL fans are waiting the start of the new season, shocking news has emerged after 3 ex-NFL players admitted to carrying out a Nationwide Health Care Fraud Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The three ex-NFL players are <strong>Robert McCune, Clinton Portis and Tamarick Vanover<\/strong> (<em>pictured<\/em>) who admitted that they were part of a group that looked to swindle the <a href=\"https:\/\/nflpaweb.blob.core.windows.net\/website\/Departments\/Benefits\/HRASPD-12.pdf\">Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan<\/a> (the Plan). <\/p>\n<p>Clinton Portis was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2002 and played for the Washington Redksins from 2004 to 2010. <\/p>\n<p>Robert McCune played for the Washington Redksins during 2005 to 2006 and represented a number of NFL franchises after that including the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins. Tamarick Vanover represented the San Diego Charges and the Kansas City Chiefs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ESPN<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wl28oj1raBA?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A total of 15 individuals were arrested as they were all part of the group that looked to file fraudulent claims and take advantage of the Plan. The NFL entered into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/nfl-new-collective-bargaining-agreement-to-bring-changes\/\">collective bargaining agreement<\/a> in 2006 to provide ex-NFL players with health care benefits through the Plan.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-players and their family were given the opportunity to <strong>claim up to $350,000 per play for out of pocket medical expenses<\/strong> that insurance companies were not reimbursing. <\/p>\n<h2>Ex-Players Could Face 10 Years In Prison <\/h2>\n<p>Portis filed fraudulent claims for medical expenses that were not incurred and received just over $99,000. But the brain behind the entire scam was McCune who recruited other players to scam the Plan. <strong>All three ex-players pleaded guilty to various charges which included healthcare fraud, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S Department of Justice says that McCune submitted a total of $2.9 million in fraudulent clams and the Plan paid out $2.5 million. In total, the Plan was schemed out of $3.9 million. McCune who is 40 years old faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and is expected to be sentenced on Nov 19.<\/p>\n<p>Portis who is 40 years old will be sentenced on Jan 6 and faces a jail term of 10 years. Of course, I knew how to play some games, such as poker and blackjack, but I never realized how well-developed this industry actually was. That trip changed my perspective on what I wanted to do with my life. After I graduated, I took some time off and I traveled through the US, exploring various casinos and land-based sportsbooks. I also spent one year in the UK, where my dream of watching Everton play finally came true. There, I realized how advanced the whole gambling industry is and that the legal aspect of it was quite different than in the US. I spent that time writing for various online platforms where I had the opportunity to share my extensive knowledge about sports. That is, until 2018 when PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) was overturned.
