Team owner <strong>Dan Snyder<\/strong> has since come out to say that he is seriously considering changing it, stating that the team has already launched a review committee to study their options.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FjTJTreKBm\">pic.twitter.com\/FjTJTreKBm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Washington Redskins (@Redskins) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redskins\/status\/1279092759052398592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/sports-betting\/american-football\/nfl\">NFL<\/a> has not publicly acknowledged receiving the letter. Many industry observers believe that Goodell will at least be open to supporting it, given his support of Snyder\u2019s announcement of the review committee last week.<\/p>\n<h2>Sponsors Back Name Change<\/h2>\n<p>A number of prominent Native Americans signed the letter, including retired PGA Tour player <strong>Notah Begay<\/strong> and <strong>Crystal Echo Hawk<\/strong>, the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/illuminatives.org\">IllumiNative<\/a>. The letter stated that they are asking for a full re-branding of the team to remove any negative racial connotations toward Native Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Snyder has refused to alter the Washington name since his purchase of the team in 1999, but has apparently had a change of heart. Snyder\u2019s announcement last week drew the support of some of the team\u2019s biggest sponsors, including <strong>PepsiCo, Bank of America, FedEx and Nike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fox Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FnlK22oyijg?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some sponsors requested the team to change its name, in order to avoid controversy. PepsiCo released a statement that admitted it was time to change the name. The CEO of FedEx, <strong>Frederick Smith<\/strong>, is a minority owner of Washington. FedEx is also the title sponsor of the Washington stadium located in Maryland. <\/p>\n<h2>Name Change Part of Larger Conversation on Race<\/h2>\n<p>According to Snyder, the review process will take into consideration the long history of the Washington team name as well as input from external sources. The letter calling for them to change their name has called the \u201c<em>Redskin<\/em>\u201d name a racially derogatory term.<\/p>\n<p>The murder of <strong>George Floyd<\/strong> while being held down by police officers in Minneapolis in May has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/anti-racist-protests-rage-across-the-us-as-sports-stars-speak-out\/\">widespread protests and upheavals calling for racial equity in the US<\/a>.
