{"id":10716,"date":"2020-05-20T15:50:01","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T15:50:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/?p=10716"},"modified":"2020-05-20T07:50:13","modified_gmt":"2020-05-20T07:50:13","slug":"u-s-open-decides-to-forgo-qualifying-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/u-s-open-decides-to-forgo-qualifying-events\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Open Decides To Forgo Qualifying Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/united-states-open-championship-golf.jpg\" width=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full\" \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/sports-betting\/golf\">U.S. Open\u2019s postponed championship event<\/a> will forgo the sectional and local qualifiers, a cherished tradition among its fans due to the staging difficulties. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usga.org\">United States Golf Association<\/a> (USGA) will be going with an all-exempt field for the championship, although the criteria to be used for selections have yet to be released.<\/p>\n<p>In normal times, a little more than half of the U.S. Open\u2019s field will be comprised of winners of sectional qualifiers held roughly one week before the championship. <\/p>\n<p>A medley of players including amateurs, nonexempt tour pros, club pros, and mini-tour players regularly make their way to these 36-hole events to gain their entry into the U.S. Open.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, the U.S. Open features 108 local qualifying events with 18 holes, and 12 sectional qualifying tournaments with 36 holes\u2014final qualifiers take place in a number of different states, as well as in Canada, England, and Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Golf Channel<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gkT0DJj024g?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tournament was originally set to take place from June 18 to 21, but has since been rescheduled to September 17 to 20. It will be held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfgc.org\">Winged Foot<\/a>, located in Mamaroneck, New York. The USGA has said it will prepare for spectators, but will play on without a crowd.<\/p>\n<h2>USGA Unable to Guarantee Safe Qualifiers<\/h2>\n<p>The U.S Open championship senior managing director <strong>John Bodenhamer<\/strong> said the qualifiers are seen by many in the golfing world as a cornerstone of USGA. The USGA has been forced to make a tough decision and cancel qualifiers in order to get the 2020 U.S. Open off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Bodehamer said that the USGA tried to come up with a way to retain the qualifiers, but found it impossible to ensure the safety of the players and the staff if they pushed through. The USGA\u2019s chief brand officer <strong>Craig Annis<\/strong> concurred, saying that their office in New Jersey\u2014one of the worst-hit states in the U.S. has made it difficult to coordinate qualifying events across different states. Last week we reported that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legitgambling.com\/news\/pga-set-to-resume-operations-with-the-charles-schwab-challenge\/\">PGA Tour is set to also resume with the Charles Schwab Challenge<\/a> to be the first tournment to be held post COVID-19.<\/p>\n<h2>USGA Remains with Four Championships<\/h2>\n<p>The USGA also announced that four of their championships will be canceled outright: <strong>the Women\u2019s Mid-Amateur, the Senior Women\u2019s Amateur, the Mid-Amateur and the Senior Amateur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The USGA now has four remaining championships. Two will be played on new schedules: <em>the U.S. Open<\/em> and <em>the U.S. Women\u2019s Open<\/em> (December 10 to 13 at the Champions Golf Club in Houston).
